In the enchanted kingdom of Brooklyn, the fashionable people put on cute shoes, go to parties in warehouses, drink on rooftops at sunset, and tell themselves they ve arrived. A whole lot of Brooklyn is like that now but not Vassa s working-class neighborhood.
In Vassa s neighborhood, where she lives with her stepmother and bickering stepsisters, one might stumble onto magic, but stumbling out again could become an issue. Babs Yagg, the owner of the local convenience store, has a policy of beheading shoplifters and sometimes innocent shoppers as well. So when Vassa s stepsister sends her out for light bulbs in the middle of night, she knows it could easily become a suicide mission.
But Vassa has a bit of luck hidden in her pocket, a gift from her dead mother. Erg is a tough-talking wooden doll with sticky fingers, a bottomless stomach, and a ferocious cunning. With Erg s help, Vassa just might be able to break the witch s curse and free her Brooklyn neighborhood. But Babs won t be playing fair....
So if you want to read this book, read the fairytale first. Otherwise it can be very confusing.
I read the fairytale afterwards and it´s like a russian retelling of Cinderella...
The book is not. It´s very different from the fairytale, but in a good way.
But it´s still very confusing... I didn´t understand a lot actually. How she betrayed Erg, the thing with the night and the hands and the Soda... And the thing with the nights being longer than usual. I didn´t get it. Over the whole book I didn´t get it. The same with the swans...
And why is the doll stealing???!
But the book had suspense and was a dark retelling so I liked that but if you read it for the first time it is very confusing.
So it took me a while to read it... Even when it doesn´t even have 300 pages.
Oh and Brooklyn isn´t really a kingdom. Or at least no one says in the book that it´s a kingdom...

Im verzauberten Königreich von Brooklyn, tragen die modebewussten Leute süße Schuhe, gehen auf Parties Fabriken, trinken bis Sonnenaufgang und sagen sich selbst sie seien angekommen. Ein großer Teil Brooklyns ist nun so, aber nicht Vassas Arbeiterklasse - Nachbarschaft.
In Vassas Nachbarschaft, wo sie mit ihrer Stiefmutter und ihren Stiefschwestern lebt, könnte jemand in die Welt der Magie stolpern; aber wieder rausstolpern könnte ein Problem werden. Babs Yagg, die Besitzerin des lokalen Gemischtwarenladens, köpft Ladendiebe und manchmal auch unschuldige Kunden. Als Vassas Schweser sie also zu Babs Laden schickt um Glühbirnen zu kaufen mitten in der Nacht, weiß sie dass das genauso gut eine Selbstmordmission werden könnte.
Aber Vassa hat ein bisschen Glück in ihrer Tasche versteckt, ein Geschenk ihrer verstorbenen Mutter. Erg ist eine toughe, sprechende Holzpuppe mit klebrigen Fingern, einem bodenlosen Bauch und sehr gerissen. Mit Ergs Hilfe, könnte Vassa in der Lage sein, Babs Fluch zu brechen und ihre bRooklyn Nachbarschaft zu befeien. Aber Babs wird nicht fair spielen...
Das Buch ist sehr verwirrend wenn man das Märchen nicht kennt. Eigentlich ist es auch verwirrend wenn man das Märchen kennt... Oder meine Englisch Kenntnisse haben einfach nicht dafür ausgereicht.
Das Buch ist eine dunkle Nacherzählung des Märchens Wassilissa die Wunderschöne. Die Nacherzähölung oist definitiv gelungen, nur es gibt zu viel was ich nicht verstanden habe.
Die Schwäne, die Sache mit dem Soda, die Nächte die offenbar so lange dauern (was ich nicht wirklich mitbekommen habe); die Tatsache, dass Babs die Nacht gefangen hält und wie Vassa sie befreit hat...
Wie sie Erg betrogen hat, die Sache mit den Händen Dexter und wie auch immer die andere heißt, die Schwäne und dann noch die Tatsache dass die Puppe klaut. Wieso klaut sie? Das habe ich immer noch nicht verstanden...
Außerdem ist Brooklyn in dem Buch kein Königreich. Oder zumindest wird das nie erwähnt.
